Nobel Peace Laureate delivers keynote on ending Child Labour in Global Supply Chains

On 27th January 2020, an international meeting on taking the next steps to end child labour in global supply chains was held in Leiden, Netherlands, where Nobel Peace Laureate Mr. Kailash Satyarthi was invited to deliver a keynote. The meeting was organised in cooperation with the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, the International Labour Organization, Global March against Child Labour and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. Also present at the meeeting were Sigrid Kaag, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation & Guy Ryder, Director-General of the International Labour Organization.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Satyarthi remarked that Governments are amongst the biggest procurers of products from private companies. He put forth the demand to frame policies to ensure that no child labour is employed in supply chains of such goods. The Nobel Peace Laureate also stressed on the pre-requisite to eradicate child labour, wherein we must act with urgency, build mutual trust and cooperation among State, businesses and civil society, be honest, encourage and support suppliers and prioritize education. He was proud to see and hear Amar Lal (a child he had liberated from inter-generational slavery in 2001 who had now become a lawyer) speak at the same International Conference.
